Law Of Attraction And A Pleasing Personality
Most of us know somebody who seems to sail through life effortlessly, achieving success, accumulating life-long friends along the way and generally having a good time and a good life. And we wonder how they manage it. Well, one of the secrets to success and popularity which allows people to do all of the above is to have a pleasing personality. Simply put, to be a ‘nice’ person. It sounds simplistic, but it’s true.
This subject is dealt with in detail in Napoleon Hill’s Law of Success series published in 1928 where he devotes lesson 10 to the importance of a pleasing personality.
He admits that first impressions are made from your outward appearance, by the way you look, the clothes you wear, your tone of voice but the most important part of your personality by far is your character.
He states that irrespective of whatever unattractive qualities you have (“even though you may be as homely as the circus ‘fat woman’”) there is one quality which will other people will always find attractive, and that is showing a keen interest in that other person and those issues closest to their own heart. You’ve no doubt heard the saying that most people’s favourite subject is themselves and their interests, and if that happens to be your favourite subject as well, you’ll certainly make a favourable impression.
“We are all human and we are all more or less vain!”
Once you have been flattered by this unaccustomed interest, you become susceptible out of a sense of fair play to give hearing to the other’s interests. Skilled salespeople may use this ploy specifically to help them make a sale – indeed it was in the context of salesmanship training that Napoleon Hill brought the importance of this principle to the fore.
It’s a principle which can be applied with intent to bring about a specific desired result (such as making a sale) but it can be equally applied in the general dealings of life to get things done and smooth your passage. Some lucky people are in the enviable position that their nature is such that this principle is applied effortlessly without any premeditation. Napoleon Hill does, however, emphasise that it does need to be genuine heart interest and not just cheap flattery as this

will achieve the opposite effect.
There’s a lot to be gained by both yourself and others by presenting an agreeable character. You know yourself that you may prefer to do your shopping at one shop (despite higher prices) rather than another because that specific shopkeeper is particularly friendly and you find them a pleasure to deal with. This is what happens when a person emphasises the “you” and not the “I” attitude.
Hill stresses that you cannot have a pleasing personality without the basis of a sound, positive character which will shine through in your dealings with people. You need self-discipline to develop the characteristics which you believe desirable and honourable. You need to visualise the person that you wish to be and reinforce these characteristics by acting as if they are already part of you. He states that you should find at least one person each day who has some good quality worth praising, and praise it. You must be speaking from the heart and truly mean it or it will have no value. This habit will develop your self-esteem and elicit the gratitude of others who will naturally feel more generous towards you. It’s all to do with making other people feel good about themselves.
